General
Information:
The
objective of the program is to promote a positive emotional response to
reading, so that children will view reading as a pleasant activity in which
they feel motivated to participate.
Cozy reading is:
-
Informal
reading to young children.
-
Reading
to 2-3 children at one time.
-
Familiar
stories revisited.
-
Making
a difference in the life of a child.
The Cozy Reading
program is offered throughout the Region of Halton, Ontario.
Focus:
The
Cozy Reading Program is offered in Junior Kindergarten, Senior Kindergarten,
pre-school and childcare programs in Halton. While all children benefit
from being read to in small groups, there are some groups of children for
whom close, interactive reading is essential, they are:
| 1. |
Children
who have had little experience being read to, who have not yet developed
listening skills, or interest in stories and books. |
| 2. |
Children
who may have been read to, but for whom the focus was on sitting still
and listening rather than on actively participating and being involved
in the story reading. |
| 3. |
Children
who have speech and language difficulties and require considerable reinforcement
and repetition in order to learn from and enjoy hearing books and stories. |
Partners:
"Perhaps
the most significant benefit of interactive storybook reading is that children
discover that books are a source of enchantment and wonder. Trusted adults
are seen as role models who engage in and enjoy reading experiences, and
the social aspect of interactive storybook reading heightens the pleasure
derived from the experience."
